UGA Math Tournament - Saturday, 10/20/2012

We have discussed in our meetings attending the UGA Math Tournament.  We just learned the registration date is this week.  We can send up to three 4-member teams.  I need to know as soon as possible how many people are willing to commit to spending the time from 8 AM - 2 PM at the UGA campus on Saturday, October 20.  I've included a link to the tournament page if you would like more information.

Please email me (mlewis@oconeeschools.org), send me a Tweet (@MrLewisNOHS), or come by my room (# 2209) and sign up on the new list on the door.  Whether we are able to send a team (or 2 or 3) depends on how quickly students who can compete let me know!

Upcoming Meetings

The Math Team will meet for practice and planning for competitions on the following dates in October:

• Wednesday, October 17, after school
• Thursday, October 18, before school
• Wednesday, October 31, after school
• Thursday, October 32, before school

Remember: you are only asked to attend one time each week when we meet.  We are just offering two times two accommodate for everyone's busy schedules.

Math League Contest Test #1

The schedule for the Math League Contest tests are out.  There are 6 Tuesdays this year where the contest has been scheduled.

We can have 30 students take the test.  The first test is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16.  We will not have homeroom that day, at least according to the schedule.  Thus, we will need to meet in Room # 2209 at 7:30.  We have 30 minutes to take the test, so if we can start quickly we will be done before school starts.

There is a sign-up sheet on Mr. Lewis's door.  Please put your name on the list if you are willing and able to commit to being here at 7:30 on Tuesday, 10/16.  You can also send me an email or a Tweet indicating your availability and I will add your name to the list for you.

Math Team Meetings - Sept. 12 & 13

As was announced here on the blog, Math Team will meet every two weeks, on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings.  Thursday mornings will be a little hectic until the end of October, because Mr. Lewis has unit recovery, but we will still work on a lot and get a lot done.

The reason for offering two times is for the conflicting schedules with the multitude of other activities students at NOHS participate in.  Math Team members only need to attend one of the two meetings each time.

The next meetings will be Wednesday, September 26, after school, and Thursday, September 27, before school.

We had 7 total students come to the two sessions combined this week. Several other students expressed interest in attendance, but had other commitments preventing them from coming.

We discussed the intention for the team to compete in these two competitions which NOHS typically competes in:

We also discussed intent to compete at the annual UGA and Georgia Tech team competitions and our interest in traveling to at least one competition.

The main part of our time this week was spent working on these problems.  It is our intent this year to really practice, learn problem solving techniques and strategies, and develop team-building skills so we can become better at the competitions we participate in.

Currently, Math Team is going to meet every other week on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings.  Team members are encouraged to attend one meeting or the other.

Our next meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, September 12 at 3:40, or Thursday, September 13 at 7:30.  Meetings are in Room # 2209.
